Decision Support Systems were born in the 70s. This paper proposes an
history of DSSs, tracking their evolution through their definitions and architectures.
Four periods are identified in the history: the early days; the
era of expert systems; the intermediary period, for which several techniques
are used: Optimization and Multi-criteria decision Making; the most recent
period related to Big Data and Machine Learning. Group Decision Support
Systems are also detailed as well as an example of such platform. Particular
attention is paid to multi-criteria decision-making methods, two of which are
described in detail: Combined Compromise Solution method and Minimum
of Rank method.
